    Family Update - September 24, 2020

    Hello KESD Families,

I hope this message finds you well. We are coming up on one quarter of the way through the school year. With everything being so busy, this time is absolutely flying by.

New Principal at Old River Elementary:

I want to start this email by welcoming a new member to our Knightsen School District family. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Veronica Polk to our administrative team in the KESD. Ms. Polk is the new Principal of Old River Elementary and Special Education Director of the Knightsen Elementary School District. Her former position was in the Liberty Union High School District where she served as an Assistant Principal of Liberty High School for the past 4 school years. Her prior work experience included working at the county level working within the Contra Costa County Office of Education.  She brings to our district a wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of Special Education, student services and school leadership. Ms. Polk was selected as our top candidate throughout our application and interview process. Because we have this school year underway, we will be working with Liberty High School administration to transition Ms. Polk into our district while providing the LUHSD the opportunity to post and fill the vacancy. We are very excited to welcome Ms. Veronica Polk to our district team. In the next few weeks she will be coming up to speed on all things Old River and Knightsen. She will be working closely with Mr. Melgoza and myself to transition into her role as Principal/Director in our district.

Flu Season: As we approach break, I want to bring to your attention that flu season is right around the corner. As you can imagine, this flu season has the possibility to be like no other we have experienced. In reading and researching I have found that there are two different schools of thought I wanted to pass along to our community.

    1) The first thought being that since we have been inundated with information and trained about ways to prevent the spread of the flu, (hand washing, hand sanitizing, cleaning, disinfecting, distancing, masks, and awareness to cover our coughs) we may very well limit the typical influenza type flu that runs through our community this time of year.  Because of these good hygiene practices, we may not see an uptick as usual.

    2) The second thought being that cold and rainy weather tends to drive people and activities indoors. With people being inside with recirculated air and sharing items like jackets, blankets, and common spaces, this will increase the chances of catching the common cold or COVID-19.

At this point, either way it will be anybody's guess. What we can do is focus on the things that are in our control. Keep practicing good hygiene, cleaning, disinfecting, distancing and staying current on your vaccinations. These have all proven to be an effective measure to limit the spread of the flu.

Free Flu Shot Clinic open to all - The Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) will be hosting a free flu vaccination clinic at Old River Elementary School on Monday October 5th.  Please see flyers posted on the home page. This is a free event and will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.   There is no appointment needed, just show up. Flu vaccinations are available for all people ages 6 months and older. All are welcome regardless of insurance or immigration status, no ID or Social Security number required.   Face covering will need to be worn to this clinic at all times.  If you cannot make this event on October 5th, there are five other events in our county you can attend.

Corn Dog Tuesday -  Just a reminder that every Tuesday is Corn Dog Tuesday as long as the weather is favorable. Come on out to Knightsen School anytime from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. to enjoy one of the best corndogs you will ever have.

Fall Break - September 28th through October 9th.  We will return to online instruction on October 12th. Enjoy the time off!
