Negotiations information

The following charts describe the substantial raises that teachers have realized over five years, amounting to almost eleven per cent (11%) for most teachers (22% for the most experienced teachers) and seventy-two percent (72%) increase in medical benefits.

Why is there a difference between administrator and teacher salaries?

Answer: Because of significant distinctions in the work calendar, degree of education, length of experience in the field, breadth of expertise, and types of responsibilities, it is difficult to make a direct comparison between teacher and administrator salaries.

Teacher pay is negotiated with the District and is calculated on the basis of 186 days of work per year.  Teachers are required to be on campus seven and a half (7.5) hours per day.  While teachers at Knightsen School District do not get overtime pay for the work they do to complete their professional duties outside of the 35-hour workweek, they are paid their hourly rate for after-hours attendance at certain types of mandatory meetings, loss of preparation periods, and teaching afterschool interventions.

Principal salaries are set by the Board.  Principals are not represented by a union.  The Superintendent salary is set by the Board and can only be increased by a majority vote of the Board in a public meeting.  In contrast to teachers, Principals are expected to work 210 days a year.  The Superintendent is expected to work 230 days a year.  The Business Manager is a classified employee, has a separate salary schedule set by the Board, and works a 261 day contract.

Administrators are required to complete a specific course of study in school administration, hold a Masters degree, and have 5 years of teaching experience. Administrators do not get overtime pay or extra hourly pay for attending school events or working over the expected 8-hour professional day.  Administrators have never been given a higher percentage of salary increase than teachers with six or less years of experience.

All current salary schedules can be found by clicking on the link:  http://www.knightsen.k12.ca.us/hrallstaff

The District and Governing Board remain committed to the negotiations process while maintaining schools that include a rich learning environment and comprehensive programs for all students in support of their success.  We thank the community for your patience and support.
